| JOYCE BROOKENS truly enjoys the beauty of nature, especially the mountains - the Rockies, the Sierra, and those of her home in Big Bear Lake, California. She combines this love with talent and outdoor experience to transform the blank canvas into a scene so real it provides a temporary escape from the hurried world. Whether it be a tranquil forest, around a campfire, near a refreshing stream, or in the cool snow, the feeling is beautifully captured for the viewer to share. Painting almost exclusively in oils, Joyce personally mounts and prepares each canvas to complement her technique. Location sketches, as well as many personal photographs and observations, inspire a painting that is not only a piece of art, but one that offers the "next best thing to being there." Awards and honors are numerous. They include Best of Show - "People's Choice", two consecutive Big Bear Lake Purchase Awards, the Sid Burns "Artists' Artist" Award, and the Festival of Arts "Mountain Award". She was the 2005 Cowboy Gathering Poster artist, and has been the cover artist for several regional magazines and publications. Works can be seen in public and private collections in the United States and Europe, and in several galleries. |
